The Table Wins best documentary award at Socal Film Festival...

Winner Of The Best Documentary Award
At The 2011 SoCal Film Festival In Huntington Beach
The Table

The Award Announced Saturday, October 1st Was Followed
By The Unfortunate Passing Of Featured Table Member, Disabilities Activist, And
Quadriplegic Writer/Actor/Director/Producer: Jim Troesch

An inspiring new documentary The Table, by independent filmmaker Ana Barredo, premiered at the 2011 SoCal Film Festival in Huntington Beach last Friday, September 30, 2011 - and won Best Documentary to boot!  The announcement was made Saturday, October 1st, only hours before the unfortunate passing of one of the films most compelling individuals: quadriplegic writer/actor/director/producer Jim Troesch.

The Table is a documentary that exemplifies the power of community, of people pursuing their dreams in spite of having the odds stacked against them.  The film follows the lives of a few individuals over the course of an entire year.  They are part of a network support group of Hollywood hopefuls and established professionals who call themselves The Table because their informal meetings occur in the backrooms of Los Angeles restaurants - most frequently at Paty’s in Toluca Lake, CA.  The Table is where doers and dreamers alike come to share their stories, strategies, and aspirations.  Remarkably, they have been meeting together in this way every Thursday for nearly 20 years!

Founded by author and screenwriter Marc Scott Zicree (The Twilight Zone Companion, Sliders), The Table has broadened its network to include thousands of creative individuals.  With its friendly open-door policy that’s free for anyone who would like to attend, The Table has attracted incredible actors, writers, directors and producers such as Guillermo Del Toro (director, Pan’s Labyrinth), George Takei (actor, Star Trek), Armin Shimernan (actor, Deep Space Nine), and Chris Wyatt (producer, Napoleon Dynamite).

“Although this group has been meeting for almost 20 years and has over a thousand members,” says Barredo, the films director, “it still has an ‘underground’ feel to it.  The goal is for this film to reach as wide an audience as possible.”

One of the most compelling stories in The Table is of Jim Troesh, who is a quadriplegic writer/actor/director.  In the 1980’s, Troesh had a recurring role in Highway To Heaven co-starring alongside TV’s Michael Landon.  Troesh also wrote scripts for the TV show. But once the show was over, the disabled actor endured a decades long dry spell.  In the documentary, he recounts with great humility and unwavering humor his tale of finding his way back to work by collaborating with members of The Table.

It was a bittersweet win for the filmmakers who were awarded the Best Documentary Filmmaking Award at the 2011 SoCal Film Festival last weekend.  Only hours after the announcement was made on Saturday, Oct. 1st they learned Jim Troesch had died.  “Working with Jim was a pleasure,” says Barredo.  “He had a way to make you feel at ease.  We became good friends and were planning on collaborating on a couple of projects after The Table.  I will surely miss his spirit and most of all, his sense of humor.”

Producer/editor of The Table Roger Lay Jr. says, “I'll miss Jim.  Last time we spoke he was telling me all about a new pilot he was really excited about producing soon.  I had no doubt in my mind he'd pull it off.  I'm really glad that many more people will get the chance to meet him and be inspired by his story through our documentary.”
